Getting VMware Server and Ubuntu

Postby Rich Simms on Wed Sep 03, 2008 7:29 am

Hi all,
Last night we built a server (made out of virtual hardware) and installed a Linux operating system on it. If you want to try this at home there are two links to obtain the necessary software:

VMware Server: http://www.vmware.com/products/server/
Linux ISOs: http://iso.linuxquestions.org/

Both these links and more are on the Resources Page on: http://simms-teach.com/resources.php

VMware Server and ISOs are already downloaded and ready to go on the systems I mentioned in the CTC and CIS Lab as well. The hours for the CIS Lab are posted on: http://webhawks.org/~cislab/

I enjoyed meeting all of you. See you next week

Hi Rich,

Thanks for these resources.

Could you clarify for me which version of VMWare to download- the 1.0.5 .exe or the client package .zip version (or both)?

Also, where do the saved drafts of posts go? I can't find a draft I just saved.

Many Thanks,

To be safe get 1.05 which is what we have in class. If like being on the bleeding edge, try the latest which I see is 1.07. The test will be to make a VM on 1.07 bring it to class or the lab and run it on 1.05. Sometimes the VMs created on newer versions of VMware don't run on the older versions. However the newer versions have no problem running VMs created on older versions.

You don't need the client package. Also when installing you may get prompted to install IIS. This is optional as IIS is only needed to manage VM's remotely.
