how do you add a printer that is not in the list?

You will need to obtain a PPD file from the manufacturer. See:

I looked into that's for a post-script printer. So I tried the one for the non-postscript and it did not like it (hplip). Not sure where to go from there...

Please provide more information .... what printer are you attempting to add? Does the manufacturer provide a PPD file or support Linux? What happens when you google your printer model and the word Linux? How is your printer connected? ...

Denise,

I looked up the HP PhotoSmart C5180 All-in-One printer on the HP support site. You were on the right track. Go ahead and follow their instructions for installation of HPLIP. Note they have an automatic install script or for advanced users you can download a tarball. If you download the tarball and view it with the commands we learned last night you will see the hplip-2.8.10/ppd/hp-photosmart_c5100_series-hpijs.ppd.gz file.
