Gimli's password

Just a hint. If you decide to grant Gimli's request and allow him to login without a password, it won't work via remote access (via Putty). However, it will work if Gimli is logging into the local host.

Let me know if you are able to make it work so that he doesn't need a password to login remotely.

You need to use vipw to remove the password for Gimli.

There is a way to do this for Putty as well although it will take some fiddling to get it right. SSH supports key based authentication. You create your public and private keys using Puttygen. Put the public key on the remote system and configure your private key locally on Putty.

I haven't done this recently so take a look at: http://www.howtoforge.com/ssh_key_based_logins_putty or google "putty key based login" for more details.

This works as well to remove Gimli's password:
passwd -d gimli
I hope we don't have to configure Putty for the purposes of this lab!

You can edit the gimli line in the /etc/passwd file and substitute an x for password hash.

You can also edit /etc/passwd directly and substitute gimli's password hash for an x.
