I just did the setup as per Rich's notes. Everything seems fine including the static routes on the home router. BUT it seems to me that I should be able to ping google.com from elrond with the default snapshot since it uses dhcp. I can ping from nosmo, elrond's default gateway is 172.30.4.1 (nosmo) ipforward is set to 1 in /etc/sysctl.conf , nosmo has a default gw of 192.168.1.1 which is my home router.
anyt thoughts?

resolved by rebooting the vm. I had done service network restart at least twice, but a good old fashioned reboot resolved the problem.
