I did some research on google and found this to be the best answer:

$ su -
# xauth merge ~cis192/.Xauthority
# export DISPLAY=:0.0
# vmare-toolbox # example X command
[/code]

*EDIT* You might want to put this in the .bashrc file for root.

That worked for me.

This also works:

$ sudo vmware-toolbox
