Nosmo down?

Postby fred_deakin on Fri Feb 27, 2009 9:20 am

Hey Folks,

I tried to work on Lab 3 at the CTC and the CIS Lab. I wasn't able to ping Nosmo (172.30.4.1), but I did get an ip address from Snickers (172.30.4.10). I was also able to ping back and forth between Elrond's port on the 172.30.4.0 network and Frodo (which was also on the 172.30.4.0 network).

I'm guessing that Nosmo is down. Rich?

I just took a look and found a surprise.

On CIS-Lab-01, I noticed the station itself could ping Nosmo, but the Elrond VM could not!

Wireshark showed when Elrond did an ARP request (Who has 172.30.4.1) it got an ARP response from 172.30.4.1 with a 00:0C:29... MAC address! (should be a Cisco MAC)

I found the Nosmo VM was running on another station. In short we had a duplicate IP address situation where two nodes (different MACs) were on the same physical network both responding to ARP requests with different MACs. I shut down the Nosmo VM and all is well again on the 172.30.4.0/24 network :)
