VMs don't network

Postby Dan Cony on Thu Mar 05, 2009 11:36 pm

I just installed VMware Server 1.0.8 and installed RH 9 as one guest and Vista Business as the second. My Host is running Windows XP. Neither VM can get to the Internet. I'm new to VMware, and am not sure what's wrong with the virtual network settings, if anylthing. (My host can access the Internet, as well as the other 2 pc's in my Windows Workgroup via a broadband hub/router.)

Much obliged for any ideas on this.

Check the Setting for the VMs. The Ethernet device should be configured as "bridged" and the OS setting should match the OS you installed.

Also please post the first two lines of ifconfig output for eth0.

You might want to try again with Ubuntu and use the following:

Rich-
Thanks for replying. The host runs a firewall I completely forgot about-- ticking off a checkbox was all it took to punch a hole for the VMs. That got me on with the Vista guest.

When I ran the Vmware Tools RPM for Red Hat, I neglected to 'configure' them. As soon as I did that, eth0 found the virtual NIC driver and came up fine (Sometimes it helps to read the instructions...)

Thanks again!
