Solaris 10 project

Postby Douglas Kittle on Tue Mar 31, 2009 3:17 pm

Hello All,

I recently obtained a Sun Ultra5/10 workstation for about $90 from ebay. This machine
came with a 270mhz (slow) and 364mb memory, with a 30gb hd. During the next few weeks I will
install Solaris 10, upgrade the cpu, memory and HD to make a very useful 64 bit machine.

Hello,

I found a 440 mhz cpu,$32 on ebay - installed but would not work due to the boot prom
(3.15v2) limiting me to 400mhz. Luckily the seller agreed to trade back and the 400mhz
is on its way.

Then on Friday,

I happened upon a sparc 10 for $20 if i would pick it up!

It is now up and running with

solaris 10
440Mhz cpu
1Gb ram
80Gb hd

and a free motherboard with the newer bios (for the other sparc) that will run the 440 cpu.

very good deal...

It appears that Oracle has purchased Sun - That could change the
whole open source solaris world soon... I will post some rumors
as they come in.

video quality
$15 was about 300 a few years ago.

It is amazing what can be put together these days for a fraction of the original costs. This also will make a GREAT Howto! - Rich

I will send some installation notes - but not till classes are over... still,
the solaris project was a good experience and well worth the investment.
