Very interesting!

You should try some of your new Linux skills now and see if you can track down what happened ...

1) What do you notice when looking at the output of:
ls -l /home/cis90/*/bin/tryme

2) What were we doing in CIS 90 the day your tryme file was modified. What lab was due that day?
(Look at calendar web page)

3) When did you turn in Lab 2?
(cat out your log file)

4) What commands did you use in Lab 2?
(cat out your lab2.graded file)

5) Do a hex dump on your tryme file and browse the readable sections
(use xxd command and either expand your Putty scroll buffer or redirect the output to another file to view)

6) What commands did you use with tryme in lab 2?
(review the lab)

7) Where is the man command on son-of-opus?
(use type tryme)

8) Do a hex dump of the man command and browse the readable sections
(use xxd command and either expand your Putty scroll buffer or redirect the output to another file to view)

9) Compare hex dumps of the man command with your tryme command
(look at the readable section which are showing various error messages)

I noticed the ascii error messages in your tryme file match the error messages in the /usr/bin/man file, for example they both contain the strings "No manual entry for %s" and "What manual page do you want?". The files are not identical though probably because Son-of-Opus is running a different version of Linux than Opus.

I think you somehow clobbered your tryme file by unintentionally copying or redirecting the contents of the man command on Opus over your tryme file.

To fix, copy a tryme file from one of your classmates (like Benji) to your bin directory which will overwrite your clobbered version.

GRADING RUBRIC (30 points total)
27 points for entering the commands on Opus necessary to do
each step of Lab 2. The instructor will scan
the commands in your user account's history file
and take off a point for any missing commands.

3 points for correct answers to the three questions asked by
the submit script (1 point each)

-1 Missing uname -orn or uname -o -r -n command [S11]
-1 Missing apropos boot command [S19]

Total: 28 points - nice job Juliana!

Hello Mother! Hello Father!
Here I am at Camp Granada. Things are very entertaining,
and they say we'll have some fun when it stops raining.

All the counselors hate the waiters, and the lake has
alligators. You remember Leonard Skinner? He got
ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.

Now I don't want this to scare you, but my bunk mate has
malaria. You remember Jeffrey Hardy? Their about to
organize a searching party.
Take me home, oh Mother, Father, take me home! I hate Granada.
Don't leave me out in the forest where I might get eaten
by a bear! Take me home, I promise that I won't make noise,
or mess the house with other boys, oh please don't make me
stay -- I've been here one whole day.
Dearest Father, darling Mother, how's my precious little
brother? I will come home if you miss me. I will even
let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me!

Wait a minute! It's stopped hailing! Guys are swimming!
Guys are sailing! Playing baseball, gee that's better!
Mother, Father, kindly disregard this letter.

4) What commands did you use in Lab 2?
(cat out your lab2.graded file)
It's listed under 3), cannot find a Lab2 ungraded version. Noticed that one of my friend's from Researceher Anonymous 'semail from AOL appereared in the cat out file recorded!!
