nVidia Driver

Postby Chris Sterling on Tue Oct 21, 2008 5:12 pm

I got openSUSE 11 and I couldn't install the nVidia driver for my graphics card. Then I did it through the YaST installer. Somehow I messed things up and had to reinstall the system. Using the YaST installer I got the spesified software that nVidia says to use to finally install ... don't know why it was painless this time.

BUT WAIT. Then I reboot the system and the X-Server can't boot up.

How do you install drivers, how do you know there installed, and how can I fix my X-Server?

This seems to be a common problem with nvida drivers. I had the same problem with my Ubuntu box. Installation seemed to go fine, but none of the resolution settings would stick, and the x-server failed to start after I rebooted. Can't remember how I got the gui back, but when I did, I used an automated installation utility written in Python called EnvyNG which loaded the drivers without a hitch. http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html.
